Mauritius is a volcanic island located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It was first discovered by the Arabs and subsequently visited by Portuguese sailors in 1507 and later colonized by the Dutch, French and British. The island got its independence from Britain in March 1968 and became a republic in 1992. Throughout the various European colonization, Mauritius has developed a very multicultural population. Slaves were brought from Africa to develop the island, Indians came as indentured labourers and Chinese came for commerce. It is no wonder that we are now a 1.2 million multicultural nation, with each ethnic group having their own religion, practices, festivals and language. However, we are all Mauritians, going to the same school, same workplace, eating the same foods and speaking the common languages (French and Creole).
The island is also very rich in natural landscapes and seascapes including white beaches, an amazing lagoon, mountain ranges, gorges, volcano craters and forests. This makes Mauritius a prime touristic destination that everyone wants to discover.
